
Hardwood Flooring Installation in Oregon: Costs and Moisture Targets
Hardwood is the one floor that keeps reacting to the room after it is laid, which is why the first question in Oregon is not which species but which side of the Cascades the room is on.
What it costs
Installed hardwood in Oregon generally runs $7 to $24 per square foot. Prefinished oak strip in a straightforward rectangular room sits near the bottom; wide-plank white oak, site-finished, over a subfloor that had to be leveled first sits near the top. A herringbone or chevron layout adds materially to labor because of the cutting and the waste.

The number that changes at the Cascade crest
A wood floor does not stop moving when it is installed. It gives up or takes on moisture until it is in equilibrium with the air in the room, and it does that for as long as it exists. The National Wood Flooring Association specifies an interior held between 30% and 50% relative humidity at 60–80°F, with the flooring itself between 6% and 9% moisture content. At 70°F and 40% relative humidity, the equilibrium moisture content of wood is 7.7%.
That band is national. Where Oregon differs is that one state spans most of it. Portland takes 43.7 inches of rain a year across 163 wet days; Bend, in the Cascade rain shadow, takes 10.6 inches across 63. Winter interior humidity in Central Oregon routinely runs 15–20%, below the bottom of the specified range, so installers there aim near 6% moisture content. In the Willamette Valley the same board wants to sit nearer the top of the band.
The practical consequence: a board delivered at 9% and laid in Bend in November will keep drying after the crew leaves, and the gaps will open in January. The same board in Salem will sit still.
Acclimation is a target, not a countdown
“The boxes were on site for 48 hours” is storage. Acclimation means the wood has reached the moisture content it will live at in that room, and the only way to know is to measure it. Ask two questions before anyone opens a box: what moisture content are you targeting, and what did the subfloor read? A reputable installer will have a meter and an answer. If the two readings are more than about 2% apart on a solid floor, the floor is not ready.
Solid or engineered, by side
Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood, so it moves across its width with every change in humidity. Engineered hardwood has a cross-laid plywood core that is dimensionally far more stable, and it can be floated rather than nailed or glued.
West of the crest, in a climate that stays mild and damp, solid is an ordinary choice and wide plank is not a gamble. East of it, in a house that runs at 15–20% humidity for four months a year, engineered is the more forgiving assembly and narrower boards move less in absolute terms than wide ones — a 7-inch plank has more than twice the width to shrink across as a 3-inch strip. That is why so much of what goes into Bend is engineered, and it is a sound reason rather than a sales preference.
Flatness, before anything else
Most manufacturers specify about 3/16 in over 10 ft for plank, and the warranty is written around it. Lay a ten-foot straightedge on the floor and measure the largest gap underneath. If it fails, the fix is leveling compound or self-leveling underlayment, and that belongs in the quote as its own line before anyone starts — not as a surprise on the second morning.
Common questions
Can I put solid hardwood in Bend?
Yes, and plenty of houses have it. It needs a narrower board, a genuine acclimation target near 6%, and whole-house humidification run through the winter. Treated as part of the installation rather than an afterthought, it works. Treated as optional, it gaps.
Do I need to run a humidifier in Portland?
Usually not for the floor’s sake. Western Oregon interiors sit inside the specified band most of the year without help. A modern, tightly sealed house with continuous heat can drop lower than the climate suggests, so it is worth a $15 hygrometer rather than an assumption.
Which species handles the swing best?
White oak is the safe default in either climate — stable, hard and easy to match later. Hickory and maple are harder but move more; walnut is softer but very stable. Species matters less than moisture content, which is why this page spends more words on the number than on the tree.
