
Two Oregons: What the Cascade Crest Does to a Floor
Oregon is not one flooring market. It is two, with a mountain range between them, and the same board can be the right choice on one side and the wrong one on the other.
The gap, in four numbers
Portland takes 43.7 inches of rain a year, spread across 163 days with measurable precipitation. Bend, 130 miles east across the Cascades at 3,623 feet, takes 10.6 inches across 63. Four times the rain and a hundred more wet days, inside one state. Between them, Medford sits in the Rogue Valley behind the Siskiyous at 18.4 inches over 103 days — not the marine climate, not the high desert.

Why rain totals matter to a floor at all
They matter twice, in two completely different ways, and confusing them is where most advice about Oregon floors goes wrong.
Indoors, it is about humidity. Wood is hygroscopic: it takes on and gives up water vapor until it is in equilibrium with the air around it, and it keeps doing that for as long as it exists. The National Wood Flooring Association specifies an interior held between 30% and 50% relative humidity at 60–80°F, with the flooring itself at 6–9% moisture content. At 70°F and 40% relative humidity, wood’s equilibrium moisture content is 7.7%.
That is a national specification, and Oregon spans it. A western Oregon house sits comfortably inside the band for most of the year without anyone doing anything. A Central Oregon house in January frequently runs at 15–20% relative humidity indoors — below the bottom of it. Same specification, two different problems.
Outdoors, it is about wear. 163 wet days is 163 days of water, grit and mud arriving through the front door on someone’s shoes. That is not a humidity problem and no amount of humidity control fixes it; it is a materials problem at the threshold, and it is why the entry is where a west-side Oregon floor actually fails.
What changes on the dry side
Three things, and they compound:
- The target moves. Installers east of the crest aim near 6% moisture content rather than the middle of the 6–9% band, because that is what the room will hold the board at once it is living there. A board delivered at 9% and laid in Bend in November will keep drying and the gaps will open in January.
- The format changes. Engineered wood, with a cross-laid core, moves far less across its width than solid does. A narrower board moves less in absolute terms than a wide one — a 7-inch plank has more than twice the width to shrink across as a 3-inch strip.
- Humidification becomes part of the installation. Not an accessory, not a recommendation on the last page of the warranty. If the plan is a solid wood floor on the dry side, the plan includes holding the house above 30% through the winter.
What changes on the wet side
Less than people expect, and that is the useful finding. A mild, damp marine climate is the easy one for wood: indoor humidity sits inside the specified range most of the year, so solid hardwood is an ordinary choice and wide plank is not a gamble. What the wet side adds instead is a different question — what is already down there. Portland is 26.8% pre-1940, and in that era an Oregon floor was usually vertical-grain Douglas fir, very often still in place under a later carpet.
The materials that do not care
Vinyl plank, laminate, tile and stone have essentially no moisture movement, which is why vinyl plank in particular has taken so much of the Central Oregon market. That is not a claim that vinyl is better than wood. It is a narrower and more honest claim: it removes the one variable that takes the most managing on the dry side of the state.
So which side are you on?
The crest is the line, and it is not subtle — you know if you drove over a pass to get home. Portland, Salem, Eugene, Springfield, Corvallis, Gresham, Hillsboro and Beaverton are the marine side. Bend and Redmond are the high desert. Medford and the Rogue Valley are the honest middle, drier than the valley and much wetter than Bend, where the answer is usually solid wood with the interior held nearer 40% than 50%.
